CRGL will fight against illegal gambling advertising on Facebook and Instagram





It is no secret that illegal gambling companies actively use social media to advertise their services and attract players. In particular, you can often see banner gambling ads from illegal online casinos on Facebook and Instagram.

Following the government's de facto ban in May of this year on the placement of any advertising by legal gambling organizers in the media and the introduction of penalties for violating this ban, which was aimed at representatives of the white gambling market, traffic on illegal gambling sites through social media advertising has increased significantly.

In order to prevent further growth of the audience of users of illegal online casino services through social networks, the Commission for Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (CRGL) decided to establish a partnership with Meta Platforms, Inc. which owns Facebook and Instagram. Both institutions will work together to combat illegal gambling.

This is an important step in organizing cybersecurity measures and protecting users from unwanted gambling advertising. In the future, such cooperation may include:

- content monitoring: joint work to detect and remove illegal gambling advertisements;

- educational campaigns: development of informational materials to raise awareness of users about the risks of gambling and the consequences of playing in illegal casinos;

- ensuring user safety: implementing mechanisms for reporting suspicious or illegal advertisements.

Such measures can significantly reduce the availability of services of illegal online gambling resources and protect consumers from fraud.

However, the effectiveness of cooperation between CRGL and Meta Platforms, Inc. in blocking advertising of illegal gambling resources will depend on how quickly the ban on advertising services of legal organizers of the Ukrainian gambling business is lifted. Since without the possibility to get information about legal gambling options, consumers will be more inclined to turn to illegal sources. This could lead to an increase in the number of people playing in illegal casinos without realizing the risks involved.

I also would like to point out once again that if legal organizers are unable to advertise their services, illegal casinos will look more and more attractive due to aggressive advertising or promotions offering favorable conditions and incentives to play.

Therefore, in the context of the ban on advertising of legal gambling organizers, it is important to find other ways to control and monitor the market, for example, through cooperation with social media platforms and consumer education campaigns. The first step in this direction has already been taken. The cooperation between CRGL and Meta Platforms, Inc. is an example of a socially responsible partnership between the state and a large multinational business. It would be nice to reach the same agreement with domestic business, in particular, on the inappropriateness of lottery advertising at gas stations!
